Bat Surveys


In the UK, there are 18 species of bats, which commonly roost in trees, caves, buildings, and other structures. All bat species and their roosts are fully protected under UK wildlife law. Bat surveys are frequently required during the planning process to identify the presence of bat roosts and understand how bats use a site for foraging and commuting.

The process typically begins with a Preliminary Bat Roost Assessment (PRA), where a building or tree is evaluated for its potential to support bats. If required, this is followed by bat roost (emergence) surveys to confirm the presence or likely absence of bats, which is often essential for securing planning permission.
